About Seven Sisters and a Brother

This choral memoir was written by eight Swarthmore alumni in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Swarthmore Afro-American Students Society (SASS).

The book is authored by Marilyn Allman Maye ’69, Harold S. Buchanan ’69, Jannette O. Domingo ’70, Joyce Frisby Baynes ’68, Marilyn Holifield ’69, Myra E. Rose ’70, Bridget Van Gronigen Warren ’70 and Aundrea White Kelley ’70. This book gives visibility to the struggle for black studies and the small group of Swarthmore students, who in the words of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, “risked their futures to make a difference.”

The book debuted at the 2019 Miami International Book Fair.
